Music

Lavalink-backed playback: queueing, controls, and the three layers of permission that decide who can touch what.

Music runs through Lavalink, so it needs a voice channel and it needs the bot online: a session lives only as long as the process does, and a restart clears every queue in every server at once. Playback itself is a set of separate top-level commands (,play, ,skip, ,queue, and so on); server-wide configuration lives under one ,music command with its own subcommands. Slash mirrors both as a single /music command with subcommand groups.

Start playing

Syntax

,play <song name or link>

Example

,play never gonna give you up

,play (alias pl) takes a YouTube, Spotify, or SoundCloud link, a direct audio URL, or a search term. The first successful ,play in a server creates the session and locks the bot to your voice channel. See Session lifecycle below for what that means. ,join (alias summon) connects the bot without queuing anything, for the same lock rules.

Stage channels are rejected outright

Music will not start in a Stage channel at all: connect from a regular voice channel instead.

Control what's playing

Syntax

,pause
and

Syntax

,resume
pause and unpause the current track.

Syntax

,skip

Example

,skip

,skip (alias next) works for a DJ, or for whoever requested the track that's currently playing: anyone else needs vote-skip turned on (see below).

Syntax

,stop
stops playback, clears the queue, and disconnects: DJ only.

Syntax

,nowplaying
shows the current track with a progress bar and controls, and

Syntax

,grab

Example

,grab
(,grab, alias yoink) DMs it to you so you have it later.

Syntax

,previous [list]

Example

,previous list

,previous (alias prev) replays the last track (DJ only), or previous list shows the play history without touching playback.

Move around the track

Syntax

,seek <position>

Example

,seek 1:30
jumps to a timestamp: DJ only.

Syntax

,fastforward [seconds]

Example

,ff 30
(alias ff) and

Syntax

,rewind [seconds]

Example

,rw 30
(alias rw) nudge by 15 seconds if you don't give a number: also DJ only.

Volume, shuffle, and repeat

Syntax

,volume [0-150]

Example

,volume 80

,volume (alias vol) shows the level to anyone; setting it needs DJ.

Syntax

,shuffle
shuffles the queue (DJ only).

Syntax

,repeat [off/track/queue]

Example

,repeat queue
(alias loop) shows the mode to anyone; changing it needs DJ.

Manage the queue

Syntax

,queue [add <song> | remove <pos> | move <from> <to> | shuffle | empty]

Example

,queue remove 3

,queue (alias que) with nothing shows what's lined up. queue add is the same as ,play. queue remove (alias rm) works for a DJ or for whoever requested that track; queue move, queue shuffle, and queue empty (alias clear) are all DJ only.

Queue caps: 25 free, 50 with Server Premium

Nothing about the cap is announced until you hit it: ,play on a full queue is simply refused. Server Premium raises the ceiling for the whole server, not per member.

Who can do what

Three layers stack, and each one only matters once the layer below it is satisfied:

LayerWho passesApplies to
In the session's voice channelAnyone in the locked channelEvery command that changes playback: read-only commands like ,queue and ,nowplaying work from anywhere in the server
DJThe bot owner, the guild owner, the configured DJ role, or Manage Server (fake permissions count)Stop, removing someone else's track, move, clear, shuffle, seek, volume, repeat, ,mode
Vote-skipAny non-DJ, when a server turns it onSkip only, and only for a track that isn't already skippable by its own requester

Vote-skip needs a configurable share of the humans actually in the voice channel (default 50%) before a skip goes through; a vote is dropped if the member who cast it leaves the channel before the threshold is reached.

Configure the server

Syntax

,music settings

,music is a separate command from playback, gated the same way as any other server setting rather than by DJ. ,music djrole <@role|off> sets who counts as DJ beyond Manage Server; ,music voteskip <on/off> [percent] turns vote-skip on and sets its threshold; ,music announce <on/off> toggles the now-playing embed each track posts; ,music settings prints the current configuration.

Syntax

,music 247 <on/off>

Example

,music 247 on

,music 247 (alias stay) keeps the bot connected even when the voice channel empties, skipping the idle disconnect below. Turning it on needs Server Premium: parking the bot in a channel indefinitely is a per-server cost. Turning it off is never gated, so a server whose premium lapses can always release the channel.

Apply an audio mode

Syntax

,mode [nightcore/karaoke/slowed/bassboost/8d/off]

Example

,mode nightcore

,mode is its own top-level prefix command (not a ,music sub) with /music mode as its slash equivalent. Setting a filter needs premium or Server Premium, and DJ. Clearing one with ,mode off needs DJ but is never premium-gated, for the same reason 24/7's off isn't: a server that stops paying must still be able to turn off what it already turned on.

Session lifecycle and the voice lock

A session belongs to one voice channel at a time. Starting one from a different channel while the locked channel still has people in it is refused: you can only take over once it empties.

The locked channel empties

Playback pauses immediately, and a 60-second grace timer starts.

Someone rejoins within 60 seconds

The grace timer cancels and playback resumes automatically.

Nobody comes back

The session is destroyed, the queue is cleared, and the bot posts a notice in the text channel it was controlled from.

Reaching the end of the queue with nobody adding to it works the same way but on a longer clock: 5 minutes idle, then disconnect: skipped entirely when 24/7 is on. And because sessions are in-memory, a bot restart clears every server's queue at once; nothing about a running session survives it.

Common issues

,play from a different voice channel says a session is already active. The locked channel still has someone in it. Wait for it to empty, or have someone in that channel run ,stop.

Vote-skip isn't doing anything. It's off by default: a server has to run ,music voteskip on first, and it only applies to members who aren't already able to skip as DJ or as the track's requester.

,mode or ,music 247 on refuses with a premium message. Modes need premium or Server Premium; 24/7 needs Server Premium specifically, because it holds a voice connection open indefinitely. mode off and ,music 247 off always work regardless.

The queue is gone after a bot restart. Expected: sessions live in memory only. Re-queue and start again.

Nothing here fixed it. The shared common issues page works the same ground from the symptom end.
